Right, I just finished watching the series finale. I need someone to help me clean up the brains from the floor, because this last episode blew my fucking mind.

 

I just stared at the screen, waiting for the punchline, the twist, the fucking crescendo. It didn't come. I waited some more. Only after the ad for toilet paper was over, I realized that was it. And it was... fitting. I mean, I would have gladly watched another season, describing the aftermath of it all.

 

Normally, after each episode I tend to get all rowdy and start punching random objects, because the Vic Mackey character was just so.. devious, and even though he was a scumbag, I found myself rootin' for him. At the end of this episode, I didn't have to tell myself "alright, time to get back to the real world", because to me it felt like an ending that was actually plausible for the real world.

 

Also, am I the only one who noticed the nod to Obama? That black dude running for mayor, talking about change and stuff?

Update, life is busy on my end. Work is hell but oh well need money to pay bills. Wedding planning is hectick, I swear I'll get that done on time. So...  I managed to get myself free of retail hell, finally!  I've been working my new job for about a month now, and I'm just starting to fall into the new routine.  What am I doing now, you ask?  Well, I got myself hired in a Day Habilitation program for Autistic adults.  Basically, I, and two other specialists, supervise and guide a group of 5 autistic men, ranging in age from 20-22, in basic academic stuff (basic math, vocabulary, spelling, etc), community integration (going shopping, renting movies, volunteer work), and physical fitness (swimming, daily walks, etc), Monday through Friday, from 9am to 3pm.

 

I thought, that since my baby sister is autistic, that I'd have avoided getting back into this industry like the plague, for fear of burning myself out (which has happened before).  However, I seem to bring a very different skill set to the staff that they must appreciate.  I kinda have on the job training, having lived with someone with autism for my entire life.  I guess the best sense of it is that I don't treat our consumers with kid gloves.  I don't soften things for them.  I treat them as I would any other person I meet on the street, because, I know that they have the potential and the capacity to do anything asked of them.  It just may need to be worded or crafted a bit differently.

 

So, I've leapt back into the world of special education, which I always seem to end up gravitating back to.  And, as I told someone a couple of days ago, this industry has countless frustrating moments, and often chews people up and spits them out.  It's not an easy thing, regardless of how it might seem.  The burn out rate for people working in this profession is exorbitantly high. 

 

But, as frustrating as it is, there are moments, those brief, fleeting moments that make it all worth it.

 

A smile.

 

A word.

 

A laugh.

 

The smallest things.  Things that we take for granted, seeing and hearing thousands of times in a day, sometimes.  These are the things that brighten the day of people working in this industry.

 

I write that, because I had one of those moments the other day. 

 

I was walking with two of our guys, just around the campus, to get some fresh air and activity in.  At each corner, I made them stop, and went over the procedure for crossing the street safely.  Here's how it went (I'm using initials to protect the names, naturally):

 

Me:  Okay, guys.  When we get to the corner, first, we stop.

P&T:  Stop.

Me:  Then, you look both ways.  Left, then right.

P&T: Look both ways, left, right.

Me: Then, if there's no cars, say "no cars."

P&T: (catching on by now) No cars.

 

People with autism (and some other mental disabilities) tend to have a speech disorder called echolalia, which causes them to repeat whatever is spoken to them.  So, at times, it's hard to know if something is actually catching on in their mind, or if they're just repeating what you're saying, with no understanding.

 

I was able to find out that what I'd been saying was making an impression, as, without my prompting, both of the guys I was walking with began to stop at corners and go through the procedure.  Granted, there were some times I needed to give a gentle reminder here and there, but, it showed me that there was a step taken, if only a small one.

 

And, hell...  Can't start anything without taking a step.  Even a small one.  =)
