So, I had always wanted to cosplay, and finally got around to it once I got to college. I was watching Death Note and automatically fell in fangirl love with Misa Amane and thought to myself, "That's her (the character I wanna cosplay)."
I got my costume together, found the perfect wig, and everything else that goes along with my outfit...but I almost chickened out... I am not a very shy person, but I have dealt with a great deal of unnecessary criticism in my life. See, I use a wheelchair because of a condition called CMT, which causes my lower arms and lower legs (nothing else) to be extremely weak. I did not know what to expect dressing as a character, who is obviously not. I went to my first con...and was rather shocked at people's reactions. No one was making crude remarks (well maybe behind my back, but whatever) or looking past me... I was flooded with compliments on my costume, my likeness to the character, and requests for a photo. I even had a few people ask me if I actually used the wheelchair or if it was a prop for my cosplay. I sometimes made the joke that I was Misa who fell down the stairs :P Lolz. I have found photos of my Misa cosplay all over the internet and none with a rude comment. And when someone wold say something like, "Is she in a wheelchair?" someone else in the site would say something positive about it. I can't even describe the warm and fuzzy feeling I got when a number of people commented that I was the best Misa they had seen, especially those in person with amazing cosplays themselves. That meant so much to me :) |

My favorite cosplay was definitely doing C.C. from Code Geass R2, i'll put the picture back up in my album again later... it was so crazy getting it done. my friend is a costume designer for the metropolitan opera house in nyc, so she decided to make my costume for me... it was crazy, even the shoes were custom designed and the outfit was velour and leather, way above the stuff you can usually find on cosplay sites. she's going to be helping me do my umineko no naku koro ni costumes of beatrice/beato since they are so complicated, my other two characters i can definitely get the costume ready myself (winry from fullmetal alchemist: brotherhood, and mileina from gundam 00 season 2). i think the craziest and funniest part of the con was that there was another person dressed up as mao from code geass (the geass user obsessed with c.c. that she eventually kills in the first season), and he wouldn't stop chasing me around the whole convention site lol.
